Monkeypox: A Comprehensive Overview

Understanding Monkeypox

What is Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a viral disease primarily found in central and western Africa, initially discovered in lab monkeys. It is more common among certain rodents in Africa.

Symptoms and Transmission

Monkeypox can cause flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes, and a distinctive rash. It is transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, their bodily fluids, or contaminated objects.

The Global Outbreak

Origin and Spread

The current global outbreak of monkeypox began in May 2022 and has affected over 110 countries.

The outbreak is primarily caused by clade II of the virus, which is less severe than other strains.

Peak and Decline in the US

In the US, monkeypox cases peaked in early August 2022, with over 30,000 cases reported by the end of the first year of the outbreak.

Global Impact

Severe Outbreak in the DRC

The outbreak has been most severe in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with over 15,600 cases and 537 deaths reported.

WHO Response and Name Change

In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended changing the name of the disease to "mpox" to reduce stigma associated with its previous name.
